I Will Walk Within My House

Spenny Moor Mansion by Barbara Mock

Psalm 101:2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
Secluded Garden by Barbara Mock

The verse above reminds me of something I have always wanted for myself and others within my home. If that is the thought that is uppermost, then even when there is trouble, we will always be trying to get close to that standard. People are always wondering what to do if they have "blown it" or gone down a wrong path, messing up their lives and their homes. No one is perfect, but we can get as close to the model as possible. At least, we have a model in the scriptures, of the home as it should be. That in itself is good to look to, even when we haven't lived up to it. It will help us look up instead of back.

I love that scripture and your writing Lady Lydia.

I'm glad that God's mercies are new every morning. As a single mother, I have to work a lot of hours but many of them are from home and I'm praying that God will provide a way for me to be a full-time homemaker again. Your writing has inspired me to cook more meals and keep my home nicer for my children and me. I never realized how much a lovely meal can draw my teenage children toward me and our family.

I struggled daily with your second point- dressing well at home whether I'm going out or not. I am, at least, working on it and giving it proper consideration. In fact, I look pretty good today! For some reason, it took me a while to appreciate the fact that it's more important that I look good for my family than anyone "out there". Maybe it's some latent residual programming from the days when I had a definite feminist mentality: Every thing else first, home last. Thank God for this process of change.
Good post.

I always felt that if I dressed better at home, the family would understand that it was an important role. It is more a position than a job. It isn't just the position that it dignifies, it is the person. I think you feel better about yourself if you've bothered to dress well for the home. And, it does affect your approach in the house. Wearing pyjamas or sweats can give the mind the impression that you are going to lay around all day or just be so casual that the work does not matter. Dressing up a little at home makes it feel dignified. Of course I understand if you are getting ready to have a baby or just had one. It can't always be a dress-well day.

Hi! I loved this post. I was not feeling too good this morning but these lovely thoughts from you, Lady Lydia, turned me around. In fact, I plan to print it out and place on my refrigerator. Karen

What a wonderful post for this Monday! I have been completely convinced, with much help from this blog, that keeping the house clean and tidy is absolutely essential. I now have to work on my clothes!

It is true. My husband has more than once been hurt bc he can tell I put more effort into how I look to leave the home than to welcome him into it! (He especially hates it if I ever apply makeup in front of him. It makes him feel that I am trying to attract people other than him!) My mom tried to teach me this growing up but I resisted the idea thinking that it was shallow. I also felt that it showed security in my relationships if I was comfortable enough to not feel the need to "dress to impress" when around them. You have helped me to realize that although I shouldn't feel the need to do it, I should feel the healthy desire to do it as a blessing and a sign of respect. thank you.

Also, could you please give some concrete suggestions on how to "school your feelings in good thoughts"? Thanks!

It's interesting that I should read this post today because at church on Sunday the Lord was speaking to me and showed me the attitude with which I should walk in my home making the atmosphere one of peace and calm and love. Thanks for the confirmation of the picture He put in my mind.

Another wise post from a wise woman. Having just closed on our first, beautiful home (which we plan to stay in until we pass on to Glory!), I am soaking up your posts like a sponge. God bless you!

As I read your post, I am seated in my study watching a silent snowfall this first day of May. What a gift . . . these words of yours and the snow. There is an integrity and respectfulness in your writing that blesses so. Many thanks!
