Bright Spots for the Home

A bouquet of flowers is such a bright spot during the winter months, but even the grocery store flowers are high priced this time of year. Primroses are only about 80 cents a plant and they last a lot longer than cut flowers. They make wonderful table centerpieces. This one is on the dining table,
and this one is on the little table next to the couch. Set the entire pot inside a decorative container or one of those pretty gift bags.

Mothers and Grandmothers will be thrilled with this new  Little Golden Book called "Little Mommy" which

takes a little child through an entire day of a little girl pretending to be a mother with dolls for children. The story begins in the morning when she wakes up, and continues with various activities such as getting her babies dressed, making breakfast, baking cookies, going outside for a walk, a neighbor visiting for tea, teaching school (the alphabet and numbers), meal times, housework, and bedtime.  It is a wonderful book that shows children the delights of home living, and boys enjoy reading the story just as much as the girls. The artwork shows the contentment of home life so beautifully, that even if you are not a mother or a grandmother, you might want to get the book for yourself.

What a precious book that I will be looking for for my grand daughter. My daughter and I are in agreement that we want her to have lots of baby dolls rather than the "fashion dolls" that are so popular. My husband bought me some yellow carnations recently and they brightened up our house beautifully.

Eloise Wilkins is my favorite illustrator of children. She catches their beauty in such natural ways. We read all our books to death with her sweet children smiling at us from every page.

This was written by another author but seemed related to Eloise in the theme and art. You can go to Amazon and it shows more pictures inside the book. Its written in rhyming poetry. I plan to go get a couple more books today: one to keep and one to give away. I think even non-moms --those who are homemakers and those who are planning to be.

I mean, I think even college students ought to have this book.

You reminded me of a Little Golden book I have had since a child, called "We Help Daddy". It was also illistrated by Eloise Wilkins. I just dug it out and enjoyed it again. Thank you.

It is still winter in my neck of the woods, but I have noticed snow drops and little purple violets blooming in the yard under the ferns.

The other bulbs are popping up out of the ground and the hydrangeas and clematis are getting swollen buds all over them.
Spring is only a short time away, I'm getting so excited.

The Little Golden Book story of The Little Mommy is the first book I bought for my daughter when she was a baby.

It is the only one she memorized word for word. When I would read it to her after she learned to talk, she would speak the words to me as I turned the pages. If I left out a word or skipped a verse she would correct me and we would get a giggle out of it.

I still have the book even though its tattered, worn, the front cover is missing and the corners of the book have been chewed round when she was teething.

I shall put it in a shadow box one day with a photo, her baby spoon, a pink frilly baby dress and her first baby rattle that is still used every year on the top of the Christmas tree.

My favorite doll was a 1955 Tiny Tears with the lambs hair wig. I never got got the doll when I was young, Mom said we couldn't afford her.

I was 55yrs old and found a vintage one in good condition at a doll show. Yes, I bought her. Even after all that time I still wanted that baby doll. Such memories.

Thankyou so much for the idea of geting this book. I will look it up and remember it for gifts too. With all the newer books showing patterns of women at work outside the home as so natural this is a welcome addition. Did they republish it recently or the stores are just now featuring it? I thought it was an older book that I had read as a child and am so happy to see someone had the thought to feature it again. Maybe even against oposition. I wonder if a note to the publishers praising their move might be a worthy thing to do to show support of this type of story. I too had a Tiny Tears baby doll with the black lambs hair wig I dearly loved. My little girl friends and I would spend countless hours taking care of our babies and our little pretend homes. There was nothing I wanted more growing up than to have a real home and family to take care of and God granted that to me.

Fantastic, Lydia, I am heading out to Walmart today and looking for primroses and Little Mommy.

And I am collecting all the spare change to go out and get more primroses. I plan to group three of them in a basket or dish for a stunning bouquet. You probably can get them for 50c in Dixie, but they are usually higher in the west. The book made me think of a woman going about her daily routine. The story told exactly what a woman at home does, even when she doesnt have children. There was a pattern there of being busy and content. There used to be a matching doll for the Eloise stories, called Baby Dear.

Even though I dont have little children anymore, I love having this book in a basket with a doll and some children's toys. It gives more life to the room!

We have that book, too, and you know what? My five year old loves it, and my two year old adores it. It resonates with them innately. As for me, I was just utterly charmed by it :)

For those who celebrate Valentines day, which call "Bless Your Heart Day", this is a great gift for any child. I watched as several boys read it to their little sister and they were as delighted as she was!!

Hi! I love visiting you here. Thanks for the 'Little Mommy' suggestion. I just ordered it. I know my 2 year old granddaughter will love it. She also enjoys playing with all the real kitchen gadgets and such over toys! My DD could get away with buying no toys and the little girl could care less!! YAY! :) I like your new blog look too.

My 5 year old daughter ADORES this book. She dictates the story to me to write down and she illustrates it. She sets up her dolls like Little Mommy. She spends hours arranging her shelves to look like Little Mommy's. She lays out tomorrow's outfits to match Little Mommy's as best she can.

I guess she takes after her mother, who was found crying at age 4 because "it was going to be so long before I could have a baby of my own."

I bought that Little Mommy book for my daughter and wrote an inscription on the inside. I also have original copies of "We Help Mommy" and "We Help Daddy." They're some of my favorite books to read to the children.

I just bought a pretty African Violet to brighten up my kitchen window and add to the pink theme I have going on in the house this time of year.

Mmm, looks like the book probably has to be ordered online, and alas, Walmart had no primroses. In fact, the only potted flowers they had were cyclamen plants, and I bought two. One is a deep pink and the other a deep, jeweled red. They are so pretty, and I understand they are hardy as well! We had another, very uncustomary snowy day here in southern Virginia, which made the blooms seem all the more beautiful when carried out through the snow.

I grew up in the town that printed the Little Golden Books. Whitman Publishing (Western Printing) was one of the big employers there. Once a year they would have an open house type of sale, allowing the public to come in & purchase materials that were slightly damaged in some way, making them unsuitable for regular retail. I remember enjoying many, many of the Whitman products....books, puzzles, paper dolls. And those Little Golden Books! I'm sure countless numbers of children learned to read from them. One of your visitors here mentioned something about the books "resonating" innately" with children. I agree!

Not long ago, while I was grocery shopping, I noticed a display (one of those wire rotating stands) with some re-printed Little Golden Books.....it caused such a mixture of feelings in my heart as I looked at them: gladness to know that people still want to read them, & a pang of nostalgia for the days of my own childhood.

Thank you for posting this, Mrs. Sherman. :o)

The Little Mommy was one of my favorite books as a little girl. I still have a much-worn, much-loved copy of it. Glad to see that others like it, too.

Lady Lydia, I am a college student, and I want this book! As soon as I see it, I will purchase it :-) It illustrates a beautiful way of life- the relaxed rhythm of a home and children well cared for. Even us "gig girls" are "little mommies" at heart.

A NEW BOOK! Praise the Lord. It looks very beautiful, praise God that someone though to write and illustrate such a lovely little book.
