A Summer Afternoon in the Garden

A Summer Afternoon in the Garden,

by Isaac Snowman, English 1874-1947

The days have been so warm and beautiful, although starting off with a cold mist all over the countryside. When I saw this painting with the tea table set in the distance, I knew I wanted to imitate it in "real life." Thankfully these days people still write letters and I can take my mail outside to read.

Letters do not have to go through the post office. They can be written and delivered if the recipient is in the same house, or if someone comes to visit, you can send one home with them. They can be hand-delivered to people at church or anyone you see on your excursions. When my children were young, they pasted hand made envelopes on bedroom doors of the house in which to slip hand made cards and notes to each other. That way, everyone got mail all day long, including parents.

If I do accomplish the scene in real life, I will post a photograph. In the meantime, it is something I will be thinking about while involved in other obligations at home.

Here is another painting by the same artist, called Good News. I have talked about Good News on this blog before, because I believe it is so good for mental and physical health.

The apples are still crisp and fresh and tasty,
and I am thinking about the nice scent of apple sauce or apple butter in the slow cooker,

And making a list of all the things that can be done with these freshly picked walnuts.

Some people dropped by for an impromptu tea so we had sliced apples and cheddar cheese with hot tea.

All so very nice. I'm thinking of starting a tradition with my 7th grade daughter - having a nice layout of hot tea and a snack when she comes home. I think she'll love it. I think even her friends will think it's nice. She would be able to invite them over right after school for a tea.

What lovely paintings...so romantic, it makes one long for those days. Your tea party looks delightful!

Your blog posts are a refreshment for my soul. Sliced apples with cheese and a cup of hot tea -- ingredients for a snack that I always have on hand but hadn't thought about. Your blog is always a lovely place. Thank you!

Dear Lydia, I have saved my sweet letters my own children and now grandchildren that they have written to me!
We have a little mail box right between our homes to give gifts or letters to each other. Just put up the flag.
I also love to have apples and a bowl of something pretty to look at on my counter or table.
Blessings to you!

I love your tea cups. I have been wandering antique stores hoping for some inexpensive red tea services. I too would love to have a lovely tea table available for my kids when they get home from school.

Lovely images! I enjoy having tea time as we do humanities studies in homeschool, but lately it has been pushed out of our schedule. Hope we can make it a part of our day soon!
