Enjoying the Rain

We are enjoying a bit of rain after a long dry spell. It's amazing how slowly things turn green when I run the garden sprinkler non-stop, day after day, and how quickly everything greens up with a light drizzle of rain. Above you see what might possibly be my last rose of summer.

It reminds me of the first dinner China I ever owned. Someone who had collected it from gas station tickets in the 1960's gave it to me. It was called Superior Hall Cameo Rose.

At the time, back in the 1970's , it was not a complete set and there were chips here and there, and it didn't really appeal to me. We used it more as every day China, til the last piece. Now, for sentimental reasons and memory of our first years of marriage, I am attempting to get a teacup from this set.

It wasn't a very colorful set, and being so young, I didn't know how to make it more cheerful on the table. On dark gloomy days, this pattern did not thrill me, so I sold the last couple of cracked pieces at a garage sale in the late 1970's.

We have already been out walking in the rain, drinking our first morning cup of tea.

If I can be as delighted with the rain when comes the seasonal deluge, which isn't so romantic, I will certainly have found one of the answers to having a sound mind.

Maybe the next time I post there will be some sewing to show.

I remember my Mother always getting different pieces of china patterns from our grocery store, I loved it! We have had overcast skies for over a week, I kinda enjoyed it, wearing my warmer clothes after a very hot summer! The sun is actually starting to burn off the thick clouds. Having a cup of tea and enjoying reading a few posts! I also have some soft music playing in the background so it does not feel too lonely.
I tell myself to everything there is a season...
Blessings, Roxy

That's a lovely pattern. I hope you find your teacup.

Back when I got married in 1980. a local bank was giving a place setting of stoneware if you opened a new savings account. It was a very colorful pattern of tulips. So being poor, my fiance and I each opened an account and got several relatives to do the same. Over time all the pieces broke and now none are left.

I don't know when they stopped doing it, but as a kid in the 60s I loved that you could get "free" towels and glasses in boxes of laundry detergent. I couldn't wait to grow up and be able to collect my own set. I imagine the towels must've been pretty chintzy but I bet the glasses were fine.

I also remember getting Christmas music albums from the gas station or tire store. Someplace to do with cars anyway.

Dear Lydia:
This is my first time to leave a comment, though I have been reading your blog for a few years. I so enjoy your 'calm' style of writing and living. You certainly seem to have the 'peace that passes all understanding'.

Like you I have a love of wearing dresses and do enjoy the patterns you post. I recognize some from my youth in the 1950's and 1960's. My mother sewed beautifully and even though we could afford to buy all the clothes we wanted - I preferred my mother's sewing over store bought. You remind me of her in many ways. My favorite color is pink and you seem to love it too. Keep up the good work - you make my day!

PS I know you don't look forward to your winter rain. We have been in a drought for 2 months. The leaves are turning brown, drying up and falling off 1 month early. I fear my favorite season will not bring the color we are famous for in the north. :(
