Books For Home (# 3)

We are having very nice weather.

I was amused at what happened to this lawn chair which I have left in one place all year. The sage plant grew through the boards and covered the chair like a fragrant cushion.

It stopped raining for a day so that I could get a picture for you.

Some of the books I reported on today:

May 2021 Country Living Magazine could be used for a homemakers scrapbook, as it has some nature-to-house ideas.

Cottage Core by Daisy Oakley has seasonal projects, which are useful as homemaking assignments for those in your care, or for yourself. It is satisfyingly creative.
Home Warming by Emilie  Barnes, with illustrations by Susan Rios is a delightful book that contains a lot of core values regarding the home. If you are homeschooling, go for the gift books rather than the school books, if you want more delight in your learning. Look for good or excellent quality used editions of these books at Thrift Books, Abe Books and other book stores online.

Hair clips I have been wearing are from the Hobby Lobby, all under $3.00.

I have made a set of nesting trays by covering corrugated cardboard boxes with the peel and stick waterproof "wallpaper" panels from Dollar Tree. I'm trying this on notebook covers, and recovering old books with it.  The removable panels also give a nice new look to old shelves.

I hope you enjoy today's review of books for the home.

  1. How nice that you once again matched your hair ribbon perfectly to your top, and also your tea cup!

I think you are right that the feminine, old-fashioned style of decorating and dressing came about in the late 80s and early 90s...I wonder if the popularity of the Anne of Green Gables tv series in the mid-80s had something to do with that?

  3. That sage cushion is so funny!
I enjoyed your broadcast today. I listened to it while I was out collecting false nettle tendrils and hunting for question mark butterfly caterpillars. I didn't find any caterpillars.
I enjoyed the poem about old age. It was encouraging. I was glad to hear that your aches and pains have diminished with the years. I hope I can age in the same manner.

  6. Dear Lydia,

I have been delighted to listen to these past 3 broadcasts on reading material for the home. I also enjoyed all the crafty suggestions you recommended. I must say, just listening to these creative ideas is already doing good things to my brain and nervous system. I have many of the gooseberry patch cookbooks… it truly does elevate the senses to look at these beautiful books. A few years ago, I was tempted to get rid of them since I was basically eating a keto diet. However, I am so thankful I held on to them because I am now cooking recipes from them again, modifying some to make them more nutritious.😉 Oh! and Emilie Barnes… yes, what a treasure her books are. Like you, I ordered them from thrift or Abe online bookstore for just a few dollars. Well, I guess that’s all for now; but, as usual you have rejuvenated and inspired me in my homemaking journey this week! Thank you, Lydia.😊

    Blessings,
    ❤️Holly

  7. I always enjoy all the podcasts and photos! Thank you! I will be traveling to Oregon this month for a couple of weeks to visit family. My plane lands in Eugene and I will wave and send a prayer as I travel by.
