I have an older Vogue pattern that is very similar - I made it in the late 1980's for a friend who was tall and slender - she really pulled it off. It is quite lovely - I just remember it taking yards and yards of fabric and all the narrow hemming was a challenge for me back than - of course I was a teenager and didn't have a narrow hem foot for my machine! As I recall, she wore it to a wedding! Enjoy sewing this ensemble!
Hi ladies. I am a frequent reader but an infrequent poster. I am just wondering if you know of any good websites that teach you in a very user-friendly way the basics of sewing. I have a machine but don't even know how to thread it! (For shame!) I plan at some point to ask one of the ladies from church to help me, but getting started with a "how to" might help and a website would be best as buying books isn't in the budget right now. :)
I agree that homemakers need patterns that are quick and simple. This looks time consuming but I put it up because I was accused of not being fashionable like Vogue, and I was amused to find that Vogue has some modest patterns, and some Victorian style patterns. This shows that it isn't so out dated or out of fashion to like this kind of thing.Maybe they should write to Vogue and accuse them of living in the past.
I love the style and the colors. I wish I could wear one right now. It is beautiful. I could not have made that even if I was still young. connie from Texas
Very nice. I can remember wearing outfits similar to the brown ensemble back in the 1980s, simply because that was the style. I was young then, and dressed according to the fashion trends, so, if a crumpled paper sack was the style, I probably would have worn it. Now, I would like to wear this outfit because it is feminine without being too flouncy, and it is modest yet stylish. Thanks.
Lady Lydia, have you checked on patternreview.com? If someone on there has sewn this, she may have posted a review. People there seem to be very experienced seamstresses and their reviews have been very helpful to me in deciding whether or not to buy a pattern.
Amy, I had not thought of that. Thanks for letting me know that you can go see what others have said about the workability of patterns. I wont be buying this pattern unless it goes on sale. Vogue is always higher than the other brands.
Nicole, I don't think I have written on that subject particularly but there is a blog you might check, that is by Stacy MacDonald. I don't know the name of it off hand. I will consider writing a few things about the subject in the future.
I think that the recommended fabrics were selected because of their drapability, which the ruffled skirt would require. You could use cotton with good results if you cut the ruffles on the bias, which would make it drape gracefully.
It's a gorgeous outfit. I'm considering getting the pattern, as it's the sort of thing I love to wear. Glad to see something out of Vogue that isn't all spaghetti straps and plunging necklines!
Oh great, now I have another item on my must sew list. :) I find that I can make time for even the most difficult patterns if I just break it down into sections (i.e. just this column, just this step, whatever) I learned that from a book from Sewing by Nancy. My youngest is a very curious and rambuctious two year old so I have to squeeze in time when I can. If I did sew it, I would alter the peplum, which I find rather boxy. I think it would look nice drawn down like an overskirt, in an oval shape.

ReplyDeleteI like Vintage Vogue. The ones they have from the 30s to the 50s. The rest are okay, but I don't like them as much as Simplicity patterns.
