Clothing Away From Home # 1 and Video

Greetings from The Manse. This is my view today, and in keeping with that scenery, I am continuing with a talk about clothing. I quoted one of my sayings in the video inserted at the end of this post:

Do not spoil the beautiful view by dressing carelessly. If the view is ugly, improve it by dressing beautifully.

I will move on to other subjects integral to the home, such as character, art, literature, music, home keeping, etc. in due time.

I read more about clothing from these two books and I showed this picture to illustrate a good way to make a non-fancy dress look more formal and put together by adding a coat. These are easily found in clothing stores and not expensive, as they are not designed to be traditional coats but made of thinner fabrics. They make you look more feminine even if you do not wear dresses or skirts, or if you are hesitant to wear longer skirts.

This is my collection of wardrobe planning for the home.

Some of these are sketches by my granddaughter who is also a sewist 🧵 🪡

The blouse and skirt I wore today is cotton and purchased at the Walmart. It would have been nice if the store had it in other colors.  In a future post I will show you how I machine sewed it to fit me better and raise the neckline.

To make home clothing suitable for going places, just add a jacket, as you see here.

For a more formal look, try scarves and shawls:

You can do a search for aprons that cover the blouse as well as the skirt. There are some very nice ones out there.  Someone made this one for me.

That is all from The Manse today.

I hope you enjoy listening while you work at home. I make these videos for my descendants, who one day may want to know how to cope with the crazy fashions of the future, just to give them a glimmer of light.
View from my Regency walk this morning.

Please enjoy moving about your home while you listen today:

Dear Lydia I am always encouraged and edified by your videos. You are a bright spot in an increasingly not bright world.

Dear Mrs Sherman,
I am in agreement with Marianne, you are most certainly a bright spot in this increasingly dark world. I enjoy your videos/broadcasts so very much! I thank God for you! Also, I have been enjoying Marion’s YouTube channel. Thank you for the link to her. Praying all is well with you.

Your granddaughter has inherited amazing talent! Through the years, hearing you speak of dressing for the season or the day, or even for the pretty flowers around you has inspired me. When I am picking out my clothes for the day, if it's overcast I choose colorful clothes. I'm not one for too many patterns in my clothing, subtle, but pretty. Thank you for this one.

PS I have noticed when we put on a smile as our final "accesory" it brightens even the grumpiest person around us. :-)

Marion has a good message to the world with her happiness and positive outlook, clothing standards and health.

I call it “ mood dressing “ which is a response to the kind of weather or light or seasonal colors. I am not that perceptive when it comes to social dressing.

A smile changes many things in our health, too.

I enjoyed this video today! I needed it. I had been sick last week and feeling behind this week. I took a moment to watch the video while I folded laundry. I do have a question about foundation (makeup) what type do you use? Which one? I find it seeps into my fine lines and I don’t want to spend a fortune on trying all of them so I wondered what you used. Your make up always looks so lovely!

Thank you for another lovely talk. I listened to this one while I made supper. I wanted to say that I think it is interesting what you said about how they had to put so much makeup on Twiggy to make her look pretty, because her clothes and hair were so plain. It makes sense, because in Victorian times, women's clothing was quiet elaborate, as was their hair, and as far as I know they never wore makeup, or at least very little. It seems that deep down women do want to look pretty, and if our clothes are too plain (as in the modern times--nothing has changed since Twiggy)--we compensate with makeup.

Dear Mrs. Sherman,
Hello dear friend! With Christmas coming I am re-watching your clothing series. We will be visiting and hosting, and I could really use some encouragement and home schooling as I prepare our outfits for the next few weeks! I’ve ironed quite a bit as I listened in. I also stumbled on something fun with your videos. I always go to your blog to listen to your lessons and see the special extra content posted- but on your regular YouTube page I found a “more” button that leads to a “transcript” where your words are typed as you are speaking. This was a blessing as I was in a crowded area in my home where others were resting and did not want to hear any sounds at the time. I was able to play the lesson with the volume down and still view the transcript as the lesson played. I took a nice break for myself seated at my “sunny window” where I sit on cold winter days to get sunlight when I’m not leaving the home. My favorite take away was: “clothing is a tool to serve others with.” Today I wore a black denim skirt with a green pull on sweater that has a fuzzy polar bear holding a red cardinal bird. It made the children smile and me too! I agree about scarves. Love the look but not functional at home. I wear my scarf over my head tied at the neck when going out in the cold. It is more feminine than a hat that pulls on and ruins your hair. It is very windy in my area- more windy than ever! If I didn’t have my scarves I’d be a wind blown mess. One more thing! Oh how you dear Lydia are right about wearing proper shoes in the home! Since summer ended I have been going around in these slip on slippers I found at Wal-Mart. A few days ago I dropped a can right on my foot. I’m still not ok from the pain. I’m in my tennis shoes and socks again. Foot wear at home is so important as you have always said! Ending this note before I go on any longer! With love to you and Mr. S. Gloria
