Keeping on Track, Education, Conversation

Please enjoy the video while you go about your home today.

I read from George Washington's Commonplace Book, which you can see here.

Enjoyed the video today. Listened while I cleaned the kitchen. I agree about the need to manage our forest lands. Here in Arizona the topic has been discussed quite a bit. But every year the fires continue. I liked the readings especially the little golden books.

I really enjoyed the entries from George Washington's commonplace book. My 15 year old son is going to be studying that time period in school this year, and he will be reading a full-length biography of George Washington. So, I think those maxims will make for some fun copywork for him (Yes, he is almost 16 but still does copywork. His handwriting is still almost illegible!)

I also loved the children's book. I hadn't ever seen that story before, but it was so cute.

Dear Lydia,

I enjoy listening to each broadcast twice to really comprehend the lessons you are teaching us. I like the idea that you are “ homeschooling “ us since I would have loved that far more than the secular, public education I received. The points of discussion concerning the difference between secular versus Christian education were noteworthy! The philosophy behind each is truly world’s apart!! It was quite introspective how you explained the word “education” from a Biblical standpoint as being wisdom and knowledge. This should certainly be the goal in a Christian homeschool setting; to impart these attributes and not fill a child’s head with empty facts. I am continually learning from God’s Word. Sometimes I think it would be nice to return to my homeschooling days as a mother and share anew what the Lord is daily teaching me.

I have a tiny wall plaque above my sewing machine that reads, “A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels.” Thank you for the encouragement to start each day seeking guidance from the Lord. When I begin my day this way, it seems the Lord adds hours enough to get done all that is required of me.

God’s blessings to you,
Holly

Laura Jeanne, I will try to post a picture of that Little Golden Book, "The Store Bought Doll"

Holly, I'm trying to clear up a common misunderstanding about homeschool. We parents, with a public school background, have a lot of the habits ingrained in us, and it was all about getting the knowledge memorized and passing the tests and getting on to the next grade. But in homeschool you can dwell in a 6th grade math book or a 4th grade reader and enjoy it for many years, because they have so much depth that an adult will want them in their memory a long time.
