Home, As You Like It

Notes for today's lesson:

If you need help getting focused in the home:

~ Dress Up
~Walk slowly through the house
~Sweep and pick up
~Re-enter the house as a guest
~Consider your home as a dignified place
~To prevent the work being mechanical or uninteresting, listen to something as you go.

The skies are more clear now and we are enjoying sunshine part of the day.

I read from the book "Mrs. Dunwoody's Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping" which I received as a gift from one of my listeners. I'm very grateful for this book, since it gives me months and months of new content~ (smile)

I am so blessed by your kind attendance here and look forward to doing a great deal more to aid homemakers in their long days at home.

God Bless You All ,

Greetings Sweet Friend, I also have that book and hope to use some of the contents to write about and useful tips in my own home! Glad you are getting some sunshine (smiles) Roxy

Hello Lydia, this is Thivashni a British English teacher at the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi and doctoral student in the UK who is doing her research in the UAE. I have really loved all your videos and I have been meaning to thank you. Throughout this lockdown and pandemic you have been a blessing and a comfort. I’m a die hard Austen fan and just cannot get enough of Austen even after teaching English for 27 years. God bless your work. We need more people like you who bring manners, routine and common sense into our world. With gratitude xxx

Thank you, Thivashni. Much more of the Regency culture can be explored through Austen’s books. Some I would be interested in are: their house designs and construction, their hymns and music, textiles, and the beliefs and practices of people in villages of the time. Jane Austen’s father was recorded as being a church minister but her books didn’t indicate much about the religion nor quite any scripture that I could detect. I am curious to know how seriously they took news reports and what their anxiety level was concerning the political activity in the world.

I shall look into that part and see if I can pass on anything to you.

Mrs. Sherman, I hope this email finds you and your family well.

I wanted to write to you and tell you how much I appreciate your broadcasts!

I have been listening to your program for years now, and can honestly say, I am a better person for having done so!

I did not grow up with a positive female role model, no real teaching on how to maintain or run a household, no encouragement to develop and nurture my femininity at all. In fact, I guess you could say, I was raised to be a 'housekeeper', a "Haus frau", and for decades I looked the part too. I fell into the trap of nurturing everyone else, except myself, and you know how that works out.... it doesn't!

Then, when I found your website, I finally found a positive, feminine role model, a wonderful teacher, to help me turn my household, and my self-image around.

I finally found a place to go for encouragement and inspiration!

Recently, I've totally enjoyed your reading of Jane Austin's Diet Book.

I also appreciate how comforting and encouraging you are re: this current political/health crisis we are living through. You find Scripture to calm and guide us, to help us think and feel hopefully; not as though we are defeated!

I like to think that even at my age, 67 years old, it is not too late for me to live a gracious life in a lovely home! It's not too late for me to cultivate my soft feminine side, and give the old 'Haus Frau' image the old boot! I want so much to become the Gracious Lady of My House!

You always look so lovely, and you really know your colors! Your home decor is lovely and soothing; Your choice of topics to discuss is very timely and very helpful indeed! You are an inspiration, not only to me, but to many women, I am sure!

Some days, when any one of my 3 auto-immune diseases makes it extremely challenging for me to get up and get busy, I am especially comforted, when you say, 'Just get dressed nicely', 'just do one thing,'. Sometimes when I have a terrible bout of insomnia, that is about all I can do, yet I don't feel bad or guilty about it, because of your encouragement.

You are so lovely, pretty, feminine, gracious, spiritual, strong, and you always have a positive victorious attitude! You are a great blessing in my life, and I'm sure, in many other lives too!

Finally, I'd like to tell you how much I appreciate your Continuous Play feature on your blog. I listen to it as I go about my housework.

I also noticed you started putting some sort of title on each broadcast, which is immensely helpful for me, as there are certain programs that I enjoy revisiting because of the topic and how it really encourages and motivates me. So, that is a wonderful new feature of your blogpost / broad cast.

Well, Mrs. Sherman, I'll close now. I wish I could have been more eloquent, but I thought sharing my clumsy, well-meant words, was better than waiting around until all of a sudden, the Lord blessed me with some eloquence! (lol).

I wish you and your family a wonderful, healthy and safe New Year!

Hello Mrs. Sherman,
I listened to a bit of your video as I was doing dishes. I've not finished your video or my cleaning yet, but I wanted to pop in and say thank you!

Hello Lydia,

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the broadcast today. I had to listen in separate time increments during the day because of the many interruptions. Nonetheless, I looked forward to hearing ALL you had to say about the home and being a keeper of it. 😊I, too, have the current book you are reading from and anticipate your commentaries as you read aloud to us. You give us lots of food for thought! I have been keeping a homemaking journal for years and many pages of them includes your encouraging, inspirational writing from your blog. I love to refer back to these whenever I need a lift. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful homemaking journey with us.

Blessings,❤️
Holly

Thank you, all of you. You are too kind. You only see the good in me. (I think that's a quote from somewhere;-)

Absolutely love your beautiful mantle and matching shawl. Such a soft, inviting color! I'm enjoying hearing from "Mrs. Dunwoody." I've owned the book for several years and never delved into it. Thanks! Also, the Listener's comments are great!

Dear Lydia, I really enjoy your videos…although I am glad most of it is “listening” so I can do my house work. I have visited your site often over many years. I am glad you are doing the radio shows. You are very encouraging and practical in a lovely way.
Home keeping is needed in this time. It is all so important. God bless and I look forward to more of your videos.
